I saw Elliott @ Liquid room, Tokyo. Two nights in a row. It was my first time to see him play acoustic. Thank you mickey for the setlist. There is nothing I can add to her report, but I feel I can't get back to work untill I write something stupid down about the show last night. I haven't got a sleep at all for two days after the first show. Please forgive my poor English.

The show was supposed to start at 7pm, but he didn't appear untill around 7:30. The Velvets has been on... "I can't stand any more more...I can't stand any more more...". I felt dizzy, probably because of the excitement and the heat of the packed venue.

I could get close to the stage, the second row on the right side, from where I saw his fingers began picking the strings for the first time. (He did his first Japan tour in Jan,1999 but all I could see at that time was only his face. I am not tall enough.) It was "Clementine". >From some magazine pictures and old videos, I had imagined him play the acoustic guiter more like...I don't know how to describe it in English...hunching his back(?). But tonight, he sat up straight, his chest out. It was like saying, " I am confident what I am doing". He coughed at times between the songs, but his voice was still strong. I was overwhelmed by the power of his voice.

Wearing black plain T-shirt and beige pants, smoking, drinking (beer & something brown in a big glass) on the stage, he looked much more relaxed than he did last night. Actually, He looked kind of nervous when he was tuning in on the first night, 'cos the audience here was so quiet. Thousands of eyes were just staring at him getting tunes in silence. :) So he was like, "Talk, Talk...It'll take some minuites...Someone know a joke? C'mon. Does anybody have a story to tell?". So a girl took a mic and told her experience at Satyricon (not sure the spelling) of Portland in fluent English, and after that, it was Mickey as you know already. It seemed like he tasted the warm and loosen atmosphere, he asked for a story again on the second night before he tuned the guiter down for "Independence day". Mickey again. She told in Japanese that she went to see him live at Knitting Factory in NYC on the New Year's Eve. "Was it a good story?" asked Elliott. "Yeah!". It was a beautiful moment.

He took many requests during the main set and two encores. A girl handed a piece of paper to Elliott, the songs she wanted to request on it. "Big disision...? I don't remember how to play it. Sorry".

He came back with some black pills in his hand for the second encore. "It's for **monia (I couldn't catch. Help needed) .<Laugh> It's not... It's not...It's good for beer." He gulped it down with beer. Really funny. A guy who had a far-carring voice (which I really envy) just in front of me, called for "Roman Candle". Elliott frowned at him first, but the next moment, he started to play it. It was not aborted like other old songs he did the day before. Before he started the last song, he asked if we wanted a happy/sad song as always. Many people yelled "Happy!". "Happy?" he grinned. "Happy. That should be easy?" But his fingers were still wondering on the strings. The last one was "Satellite", it was the same guy's request. The most beautiful night I've ever had.

Well, I hope I can get to sleep tonight. Thank you for your patience with my *terrible* English. I'm sure Mitch and some other people will post the setlist and reviews of the upcoming Fykuoka, Osaka and Nagoya shows. Bye.

mari

P.S. I tried to record the shows on my MD, I totally failed on the first night and the second night one is terrible...too much noise becouse of the slippery mic. If anybody has taped the show successfully, please, please let me know! There's a long way to go to be a good taper. *Sigh*.
